While students are already tested in school, if you or your child scores above the 90th percentile on their standardized tests, the scoreisn’t telling you what your child knows beyond what was covered on the test.NUMATS provides students with theopportunity to take certaintests years before they normally would. For example, the EXPLORE test, typically given in eighthgrade, is offered to students in grades three through six, and the ACT andSAT, typically taken in 10th or 11th grade, areoffered to students in grades six through nine. After studentstake one of thetests, theyreceive recommendationsonareas theycan improve in, and, depending on their score, theymaybe offered an invitation to participate insupplemental programs.These supplemental programs include online, weekend, and summer programs. Supplemental programs offer advanced, unique courses to students that allow them to be appropriately challenged and learn more about a subject of interest to them. Some supplemental programs last onlya single weekend while others run formultiple weeks or weekends. Supplemental programs canbe online or in-person classes, depending on the specific course. Who’s Eligible for the NUMATS Program? Students in grades three through nine who meet one or more of the following criteria can enroll in the program: Participated previously in NUMATS or another talent search program. Qualify for their school’s gifted program. Be recommend bya teacher or parent, based on their exceptional verbal or mathematical reasoning skills, consistently high level of performance on demanding coursework, or repeatedrequests for more challenging academic experiences. Meet grade-level assessment criteria in either verbal/reading or math on a nationally normed or state achievement test. What Are the NUMATS Test Dates for 2015-16? EXPLORE, SAT, and ACT tests are offered through NUMATS year round. There are test centers throughout the US, so you can participate in NUMATS no matter where you live.You can search for a test date at a test center near you through the NUMATS website. Why Should You Participate in NUMATS? When you participate in NUMATS, you’re provided with test preparation materials.After you take atest and receive your scores, you’ll get recommendations for selecting future classes and extracurriculars in math, science, social science and the humanities based on your scores. Also, you’ll receive instructional resources for use at home and in the classroom.For high scorers, there will be an award ceremony at Northwestern with scholarships presented to first-place scorers. It's great to get this exposure at a younger age rather than wasting time and money in college debating what you should major in. I’d highly recommend doing NUMATS if you qualify and can afford it. How To Apply and Application Requirements You apply through the NUMATS website by creating an account. The application requirements are the same as the eligibility requirements listed above. As I said before, you need to meet one of the following requirements and provide proof in your application: Previously participated in NUMATS or another talent search program Participate in the gifted program at your school Meet grade-level assessment criteria in either verbal/reading or math on a nationally normed or state achievement test Can provide a teacher or parent letter of recommendation stating you’re performing at a consistently high level in verbal/reading or math. How Much Does NUMATS Cost? The exact cost of taking the NUMATS test is $74-93.50, depending on which test you take. This feecovers the cost of taking the test and the cost of the NUMATS program (which includes access to all of the benefits listed above in the Why Participate section). Is There Financial Aid? Based on the research from the article on adolescent truancy I learned that truancy has become an ever growing problem and is caused from several different factors. Adolescent truancy is caused by multiple out-of-school and in-school factors. The majority of abscises are driven from outside factors, such as family problems, living conditions, substance use, and community involvement, and school factors, like bullying or hazing. Looking at the research by Dube and Orpinas(2009) it breaks it down into three main behavioral profile groups based on reinforcement be it negative and positive reinforcement, also no reinforcement. Stereotypes of Mothers Single mothers, young mothers, and mothers in general have stereotypes attached to them. When you walk into a store with your child, depending on which of those stereotypes you fall into, people treat you completely different from the way they would if you were without child. I have ventured out without my son and with him to get my own perspective on how sales people and the general public react to me; I have also observed how people react to other single mothers, married mothers and single people. I volunteered two of my friends to go with me each time to observe how other people acted toward me. From the reactions observed its obvious that people think that mothers, in general, are kind, loving, honest, and modest. If you see someone walking into a store, mid to late 20’s or older with a child people get the â€Å"ahh† emotion. They see the child and they’re automatically compelled to smile and think â€Å"isn’t that sweet.† In upscale stores, if you’re dressed accordingly, you are not followed around and the sales people are more than willing to assist you. Some will even stand around and talk to you and amongst each other about how cute or sweet the child is, smile at you, and it gives you a feeling of warmth; you feel welcome. As I shopped this past weekend, I watched how people reacted to mothers, married women with their children. The give a lot of smiles and while greeting the women with children on their way in, they would look at the woman’s hand, to see if there was a ring I assume. As for the younger generation getting pregnant and having children, I think it is sad, but they are taking on that responsibility and there is no reason that society should look down on them for that. I believe that trying to eliminate mosquitoes will not prevent malaria outbreaks. If malaria is a parasite of the genus Plasmodium (CDC, 2011) and is only present in the female population, then wiping out female mosquitoes means no procreation. As learned in previous units; disrupting the ecological cycle can cause greater damage than for the greater good. Mosquitoes are apart of the the food chain; they give other organisms, such as aquatic animals that prey on the mosquito larvae, a food source. The most common predator is the Gambusia affinis (Karen, 2015). If we were to get rid of mosquitoes, then we’d be cutting off food supplies for other aquatic species. Any change to an ecosystem can drastically affect the cycle of life in a given area. Consequences can lead to (in worst case scenario) extinction of necessary organisms that are help not only the other organisms around it, but the environment as well. Another reason this wouldn’t be effective is because bacteria is progressing and becoming smarter, more manipulative and can resist easier than back then. Malaria will most likely look for another host to live off of. There are thousands of other species on Earth that haven’t been discovered yet, so it’s impossible to say only female mosquitoes are the only carriers of this parasitic disease (CDC, 2011). This parasite could be living in an unknown organism and could have the potential to cause just as much damage as the mosquito can. Malaria (in rare cases if not in a
